Necessary documents for PAN card
A PAN card is a necessary and vital document, which is used to track your tax liabilities and other data. When applying for a PAN, individuals would need to arrange for a few pieces of paperwork. Documents required to apply for a PAN card application online (citizens of India)
The PAN card documents required list for citizens of India typically involves three types of documents. These are proof of identity, proof of birth, and proof of address. Therefore, if a citizen of India wishes to apply for a PAN card online, he/she must keep the documents mentioned below handy –
Documents related to proof of identity
Individuals have to submit the following documents to apply for a PAN card –
- Voter ID card
- Passport
- Ration card with the applicant’s photo
- Driving license
- Aadhaar card
- Photo ID card (issued by the Central Government/State Government/underrating public sector).
- Arm’s license
- Pensioner card copy with the applicant’s photograph.
- An attested certificate with the applicant’s photo and bank account number.
Documents needed for pan card application also include –
- An identity certificate in the required format signed by a Member of Assembly, Member of Parliament, Gazetted Officer or Municipal Corporation.
- Bank statement on letterhead with name. Also, the stamp of the issuing officer and duly attested photograph and the applicant’s account number.
Documents related to the proof of birth
Individuals need to submit a copy of the following documents as proof of DOB.
- Birth Certificate
- Matriculation Certificate from a recognized board
- Passport
- Driving license
- Aadhaar card
- Pension payment order
- Marriage Certificate
- Domicile Certificate (issued by Government of India or State Government).
- Photo identity card (issued by Government of India or State Government, Central Government undertaking or State Government undertaking).
- Affidavit recognizing the DOB (signed before a magistrate)
Documents related to the proof of address
Individuals need to submit a copy of the following documents as proof of address.
- Electricity bills
- Broadband connection bills
- Landline bills
- Voter ID card
- Aadhaar card
- Driving license
- Passport
- Credit card statements
- Post office passbooks having the applicants’ address
- Bank account statements
- Domicile Certificate
- Accommodation allotment letter (issued by the Central or State Government of less than or 3 years old)
- Documents of property registration
Individuals must provide the latest utility bills, and bank/credit card statements (not more than three months).
Note:
- The documents required for minor applicants involve the parent’s/guardian’s identity proof that would serve as both the identity and address proof of the minor applicant.
- The documents (as proof of identity) needed for Hindu Undivided Family or HUF(s) includes an affidavit of the Karta of the HUF declaring the name, father’s name, and address of all the coparceners on the application date.
Documents required for PAN application by NRIs
The documents required for a PAN card application for an NRI differ from the documents required for the citizens of India. To apply for a PAN, an NRI has to submit only proof of identity and proof of address.
Documents related to the proof of identity
NRIs need to submit a copy of the following documents –
- Passport
- OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India) card allotted by the Government of India
- PIO (Persons of Indian Origin) card allotted by the Government of India
- Any of the following documents: citizenship ID number, taxpayer ID number, national ID number. The document must be attested either by the apostille* or by the High Commissioner/Indian Embassy/Consulate working in the applicant’s native country.
*Apostille- Apostille refers to the specialized certificate (international attestation) that is accepted by countries that participated in the 1961 Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents. The certificate is accepted in nearly 92 countries and works as a way of authentication to validate the documents.
Documents related to the proof of address
The documents required for the NRI PAN card is listed below –
- Passport
- PIO card issued by the Central Government
- OCI card issued by the Central Government
- Registration Certificate that the Foreigner’s Registration Office issues, showing Indian address
- Non-resident foreign bank account statements in India
- Bank statements of the foreign country where the applicant resides
- Any of the documents of citizenship ID number, taxpayer ID number, national ID number. The document must be attested either by the apostille or by the Indian Embassy/the High Commissioner/Consulate working in the applicant’s native country.
- Visa (granted by the foreign country)
- An appointment letter copy was given by the Indian company/employer-issued original Address Certificate in India.

Documents for company PAN card
Like individuals and NRIs, companies can also apply for PAN cards online. However, various segments are classified under the category of companies. These are-

Below is a list of documents required for the company PAN card application that both act as proof of identity and proof of address.
- Company- Registration Certificate (issued by the Registrar of Companies) copy.
- Limited Liability Partnership- Registration Certificate (issued by LLPs) copy.
- Trust- Registration number certificate or trust deed certificate copy (issued by the Charity of Commissioner).
- Partnership firm- Registration Certificate (issued by the Registrar of Firms)/Partnership deed copy.
- Association of persons, local authority, body of individuals, artificial juridical person – Registration number certificate/agreement copy issued by Charity Commissioner or Registrar of cooperative society or equivalent document by the Central or State Government recognizing the identity and address of the concerned person.
Documents necessary for PAN card application by Indian incorporated companies
Companies incorporated in India and running a business here must have a PAN card. In addition, businesses generating income need to have a PAN. The unique number must be mentioned during all the financial transactions of the company and invoices and in other registrations.
Below are the documents required for a PAN card application for companies incorporated in India.
- A copy of the Certificate of Incorporation issued by the Registrar of Companies.
- Documents of the registered office as proof of address of the company.
- In case the company has no office in India, they need to furnish a copy of the Certificate of Incorporation from the government and the address of the company’s registered office.
- Bank draft copy for the paid fee along with the application form.
Cost to apply for a PAN card online
- For the Indian communication address, the charge for applying for a PAN is Rs.93 (excluding Goods and Services Tax).
- For the foreign communication address, charges for applying for a PAN are Rs.864 excluding Goods and Services Tax).
